The life insurance industry can be a very rewarding career choice. There are two ways to get started in this business. One way is to become an employee of an agency or company. The topic of today’s post is: How to become a fully licensed independent life insurance agent.

Become a Life Insurance Agent

Step 1. Make the Decision to become an agent.  In order to move forward, a decision has to be made that you will be committed to follow through. When you have a tough day struggling passing your practice exams, you need to stick to your decision and tough it out.

Step 2. Get Educated! In order to sell insurance anywhere, you must become a licensed insurance agent. Be sure to check which license types are available in your state and figure out what lines of insurance you plan on selling.

Step 3. Apply for Your License. Do this once you get your pre license class out of the way. Part of the application process included getting fingerprinted, and a background check. And sometimes a credit check as well depending on your situation or state. For this step, be sure to check that all your states prerequisites are meet. Once all the correct paperwork is submitted, wait for your clearance to take the state license exam.

Step 4. Life Insurance State Exam. Once you are cleared for the exam, be sure to schedule your state exam as soon as possible after completing your pre license class while all that newly learned information is still fresh in your head. The exam length and questions vary by state but no worries if you were able to get though the pre license class. You will be able to pass your life insurance state exam.

Step 5. License. Upon successful completion of passing your licensed state exam, normally within a few days. Then you will be able to print a copy of your license and have a national producer number.
